Sanskrit Vedic Rituals at DMK Veteran Durai Murugan’s Wedding Spark Debate

The family wedding of DMK veteran Durai Murugan was marked by the inclusion of Sanskrit Vedic rituals, a departure from the party’s traditional emphasis on Tamil cultural practices. The Dravidian movement, which has long championed Tamil identity and downplayed Sanskrit influence, views the use of Vedic rites as a potential ideological shift. Party insiders and political commentators have voiced concerns that the ceremony could signal a softening of the party’s core principles, while some supporters argue that the rituals reflect personal faith rather than political stance. The incident has reignited discussions about the place of Sanskrit in contemporary Dravidian politics and the broader cultural narrative in Tamil Nadu.
