Samajwadi Party drops third candidate; BJP set to win 8 of 10 UP Rajya Sabha seats

The Samajwadi Party announced it will not field a third candidate in the Uttar Pradesh Rajya Sabha election, leaving the BJP on track to secure eight of the ten seats up for grabs.

Uttar Pradesh will elect ten members to the Rajya Sabha in the upcoming cycle, a key component of the federal upper house. The state’s large allocation makes the contest a focal point for national parties.

The Samajwadi Party, which had earlier signaled the possibility of a third nominee, officially withdrew that plan on Tuesday. Party officials said the move reflects a strategic recalibration after internal consultations, though no detailed rationale was provided.

Analysts note that the BJP, already holding a dominant position in the state legislature, is now projected to win eight of the ten seats. The remaining two are expected to go to opposition parties, likely the SP and the Bahujan Samaj Party, depending on vote transfers.

If the BJP secures the eight seats, it will further consolidate its influence in the upper house, strengthening its ability to shape national legislation ahead of the next general election.
