A self‑help group of rural women in Dhalai district of Tripura has opened a community café aimed at generating income and promoting local produce.

A self‑help group (SHG) of women from villages in Dhalai, Tripura, inaugurated a modest café this week, marking the first such venture by a rural women’s collective in the district. The outlet, located near the Dhalai block headquarters, is intended to create regular earnings for its members and serve as a showcase for locally sourced food and beverages.

The café’s menu features traditional Tripuri snacks, tea from nearby plantations, and dishes prepared with bamboo shoots and seasonal vegetables sourced from the members’ own farms. Training in food hygiene, customer service and basic accounting was provided through a partnership with a state‑run rural development agency, enabling the women to manage operations independently.

According to the group’s coordinator, the initiative not only offers steady employment to the participating families but also helps preserve regional culinary traditions. The SHG hopes the café will attract both locals and travelers, thereby expanding market access for their agricultural produce.

Local officials praised the project as a model of women‑led entrepreneurship that aligns with Tripura’s broader goal of diversifying rural incomes. The members plan to expand the café’s reach by introducing a mobile stall that can attend weekly markets across the district.
