The Meghalaya High Court was informed that runway work at Shillong Airport is underway and a road linking nearby villages is in the pipeline.
The High Court of Meghalaya received an update that construction work to extend the runway at Shillong Airport has begun. Officials said the project aims to accommodate larger aircraft and improve the airport's capacity for both passenger and cargo traffic.
In addition to the runway work, authorities outlined plans for a new access road that will connect several villages surrounding the airport. The road is intended to facilitate smoother movement of residents and support local economic activities.
The expansion is part of a broader effort to boost tourism and connectivity in the northeastern region, with the state government emphasizing the strategic importance of modernising air infrastructure.
Stakeholders expect the runway extension to be completed in phases, while the village road project will proceed concurrently, subject to environmental clearances and funding approvals.
The developments reflect Meghalaya's commitment to enhancing regional transport links, potentially attracting more airlines and fostering growth in the hospitality sector.
