A Right‑to‑Information filing shows Uttarakhand has 545 unfilled specialist doctor posts, leading to 52,942 patient referrals to other states.

A Right‑to‑Information (RTI) request filed with the Uttarakhand health department has disclosed a stark shortage of specialist physicians in the state. The data indicates that 545 specialist doctor positions remain vacant across government hospitals.

Because of these gaps, a total of 52,942 patients have been referred to medical facilities outside the state during the reporting period. The referrals reflect the inability of local hospitals to provide the required specialist care.

The figures underscore a pressing need for accelerated recruitment and deployment of qualified specialists to curb the outflow of patients and improve access to advanced medical services within Uttarakhand.
