₹53 Lakh Crore Disbursed to Beneficiaries via Direct Benefit Transfer in 12 Years

The government reports that ₹53 lakh crore has been transferred to beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system over the past 12 years, with the majority routed to Jan Dhan accounts.
The Ministry of Finance has disclosed that a cumulative total of ₹53 lakh crore has been transferred to government beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism over the last twelve years. The figure reflects all cash assistance, subsidies and pension payments routed via the digital platform since its inception.
DBT was introduced to minimise leakages in welfare delivery by moving funds directly into the bank accounts of intended recipients. By eliminating intermediaries, the scheme aims to improve transparency and speed of disbursement across a wide range of central and state programmes.
According to the data, the overwhelming share of these transfers has been credited to accounts opened under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. Jan Dhan accounts, which provide basic banking services to unbanked households, have become the primary conduit for the DBT payouts.
Officials said the continued expansion of digital banking infrastructure and the integration of beneficiary databases have been key drivers behind the scale of transfers. The government plans to further strengthen the system to ensure that future disbursements reach the intended population without delay.
