The government has earmarked Rs105 billion to strengthen the BharatNet broadband initiative in Maharashtra, aiming to enhance rural internet connectivity.
The central and state authorities have jointly approved a funding package of Rs105 billion for the BharatNet programme in Maharashtra. The allocation is intended to accelerate the deployment of high‑speed broadband infrastructure across the state's rural districts. BharatNet, a flagship digital‑inclusion scheme, seeks to connect villages to the national fiber network, enabling access to online services, education and e‑governance.
Under the new funding, additional fiber optic lines and last‑mile connectivity solutions will be installed in underserved areas. The investment is expected to reduce the digital divide and support the government's broader goal of creating a digitally empowered rural population.
Officials indicated that the funds will be disbursed over the next financial year, with progress monitored by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in coordination with Maharashtra's state agencies. The move underscores the continued emphasis on expanding internet reach as a catalyst for socio‑economic development.
