Police in Uttar Pradesh have uncovered a fraud in which Rs 7.4 crore of real currency stored in a Punjab National Bank vault was replaced with fake notes.

Uttar Pradesh police have reported a major cash fraud involving Punjab National Bank (PNB). An audit of a PNB vault revealed that cash worth Rs 7.4 crore, originally stored as genuine currency, had been swapped with counterfeit notes.

The discovery was made during a routine verification of the vault’s holdings. Authorities say the substitution appears to have been carried out with the knowledge of individuals who had access to the vault, prompting a criminal investigation.

Investigators have sealed the vault and are reviewing surveillance footage, transaction logs, and staff records to identify those responsible. The case has been registered under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with forgery and fraud.

Bank officials have assured customers that the incident is isolated and that steps are being taken to strengthen internal controls. The police have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

The matter remains under active investigation, and further details will be released as they become available.
