The Archaeological Survey of India has formed a specialist team to study and restore the fragmented 11th‑century Vishnu statue at Jawari Temple in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh.

The Jawari Temple, part of the UNESCO‑listed Khajuraho group of monuments in Madhya Pradesh, houses a broken stone image of Lord Vishnu dating back to the 11th century. The idol, which has been missing its head for decades, is a rare example of early medieval iconography in the region.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has now initiated a formal restoration process. A technical study team comprising archaeologists, conservators and stone‑sculpture experts has been assembled to assess the damage, document the fragments and devise a method to re‑attach a new head that matches the original style.

The ASI officials said the work will be carried out in accordance with national heritage guidelines, ensuring that the statue’s historical integrity is preserved. Once restored, the Vishnu idol is expected to enhance the cultural value of the Jawari Temple and attract more scholars and visitors to Khajuraho’s rich artistic legacy.
