Protesters in North Tripura blocked a major road to demand immediate relief from a severe drinking‑water shortage.
Residents of North Tripura staged a road blockade on a key arterial route on Thursday, citing an acute shortage of safe drinking water in the district. The protestors set up barricades with vehicles and local materials, halting traffic and drawing attention to the deteriorating water supply situation.
Local authorities were alerted to the demonstration and dispatched police personnel to manage the crowd and ensure that the blockade did not turn violent. Officials confirmed that water distribution schemes in several villages have been disrupted due to low reservoir levels and infrastructure failures.
The demonstrators demanded prompt remedial action, including the repair of broken pipelines and the provision of emergency water tankers. They warned that continued inaction could exacerbate health risks for the community, especially among vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
The blockade remained in place for several hours before a partial clearance was negotiated, allowing limited traffic to resume while discussions between community leaders and district officials continued.
