Reservoir Levels Rise Yet Overall Water Storage Stays Below Normal, Says Ministry

Recent monsoon rains have lifted reservoir levels in several Indian states, but total water storage remains below the long‑term average, according to the Ministry of Water Resources.
The Ministry of Water Resources released a weekly bulletin showing that reservoir levels across India have risen following the recent monsoon showers. Data collected from major dams in the north, central and south regions indicate a noticeable rebound compared with the previous week.
Despite the upward trend, the ministry cautioned that overall water storage is still lagging behind the historical norm for this time of year. The aggregate volume of water held in reservoirs remains below the long‑term average, reflecting the shortfall in rainfall earlier in the season.
Officials highlighted that the shortfall could affect irrigation schedules, drinking‑water supply and hydro‑electric generation in the coming months. They urged states to continue water‑conservation measures and to monitor inflows closely as the monsoon progresses.
The report also noted that while some basins have approached near‑normal levels, others, particularly in drought‑prone zones, continue to face deficits. Authorities will keep updating the public as new data become available.
