The Rengali Dam in Odisha released water after the reservoir level rose to critical levels, with authorities opening the gate to prevent potential flooding.

On Tuesday, the Rengali Dam in Odisha opened its floodgates after the reservoir level reached 11.5 meters, a critical threshold for the structure. The decision was taken by the Odisha Water Resources Department following a rapid rise in inflow from the Brahmani River during the monsoon season.

The gate was partially opened to release excess water, reducing the pressure on the dam walls and preventing a possible overtopping scenario. Engineers monitored the discharge rate closely, ensuring it stayed within the safe limits set by the Central Water Commission.

Local authorities warned residents downstream, particularly in the Khordha district, to stay alert for any sudden rises in river levels. The release is expected to lower the reservoir to 10.8 meters by the end of the week.

Officials stated that the operation was carried out in accordance with standard safety protocols and that no immediate damage or displacement of communities was anticipated.
