The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Assam and Meghalaya, warning of potentially severe rainfall and flooding.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the states of Assam and Meghalaya, indicating a high risk of heavy rainfall and possible flooding in the region.

A red alert is the highest level of warning issued by the IMD, signalling that rainfall could be intense enough to cause significant damage, landslides, and disruption to transportation and communication.

Officials in both states have urged residents to stay alert, secure loose objects, and avoid traveling to low-lying areas. Emergency services are on standby to respond to any incidents.

In addition to the red alert in Assam and Meghalaya, the IMD has issued orange‑yellow rain warnings for more than 15 other states across India, signalling moderate to heavy rainfall in those areas.
