The Reserve Bank of India has outlined fresh safety guidelines aimed at reducing online fraud incidents, urging banks and payment providers to adopt stronger authentication and monitoring mechanisms.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has issued a set of new safety measures designed to curb the rising tide of digital frauds affecting consumers and businesses alike. In a recent circular, the central bank highlighted the need for tighter security protocols as online transactions continue to surge across the country.

Key recommendations include mandatory multi‑factor authentication for high‑value transfers, stricter transaction limits for unsecured channels, and the deployment of real‑time fraud‑detection analytics by banks and payment service providers. The RBI also urged financial institutions to enhance customer awareness programmes, focusing on phishing, spoofing and other common scams.

The guidelines are to be implemented in phases, with a compliance deadline set for the end of the fiscal year. The regulator said it will monitor adherence through periodic audits and may impose penalties for non‑compliance. By tightening the digital payment ecosystem, the RBI aims to restore confidence among users and reduce financial losses caused by cyber‑criminals.

Industry observers note that the move aligns with global trends toward stronger cybersecurity standards in the financial sector, and could pave the way for more secure digital banking services in India.
