A Pacific golden plover, a bird rarely seen in India, has been recorded for the first time in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, according to Himachal Scape.
Birdwatchers and ornithologists in Himachal Pradesh have confirmed the sighting of a Pacific golden plover (Pluvialis fulva) in the high-altitude habitats of Kinnaur district. The observation, reported by the regional portal Himachal Scape, marks the first documented record of this species within the state.
The Pacific golden plover is a migratory shorebird that typically breeds in Arctic tundra and winters along coastal regions of East Asia and Oceania. Its appearance in the Himalayan foothills is unusual, suggesting possible shifts in migration routes or a rare vagrancy event.
Local wildlife officials have noted the bird's presence as a significant addition to the region's biodiversity inventory. They plan to conduct further surveys to verify whether the species may establish a seasonal pattern in the area.
Conservationists emphasize the importance of preserving the fragile alpine ecosystems of Kinnaur, which provide critical stopover habitats for many migratory birds. The sighting underscores the need for continued monitoring and habitat protection in the face of climate change.
The discovery has generated excitement among the bird‑watching community, with several enthusiasts hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive plover during its brief stay.
