Rare leucistic great cormorant observed at Ameenpur Lake in Telangana

A group of local birdwatchers recently documented a great cormorant with a leucistic (white‑patch) plumage at Ameenpur Lake, a freshwater reservoir on the outskirts of Hyderabad, Telangana. The bird, identified as a great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo), displayed an unusually pale coloration that is caused by a genetic condition known as leucism, which reduces melanin pigmentation.

Leucism is rare among waterbirds, and sightings of a leucistic great cormorant are infrequent in India. Ornithologists note that such individuals are often more visible to observers because of their striking contrast against the typical dark feathers of the species. The observation adds to the growing list of unusual avian colour morphs recorded in the region's wetlands.

Ameenpur Lake is a popular spot for migratory and resident waterbirds, and the recent sighting is expected to draw additional interest from the bird‑watching community.
