A rare female sambar deer was spotted in the forested region of South Kashmir, according to Kashmir Life. The sighting highlights the presence of this vulnerable species in the area.
Kashmir Life reported that a female sambar deer, a species considered rare in the region, was observed in the dense woodlands of South Kashmir. Wildlife officials confirmed the identification based on the animal's size, antler pattern and distinctive coat.
The sighting was made by local forest staff during a routine patrol in the early hours of the day. Such observations are valuable for conservationists, as the sambar population in the Himalayan foothills has been declining due to habitat loss and poaching pressures.
Authorities say the forest department will increase monitoring efforts and work with community groups to protect the habitat. No immediate threats to the animal were reported at the time of the encounter.
The discovery underscores the need for continued wildlife surveys in Jammu and Kashmir, where several endangered species still find refuge in remote valleys.
Experts hope that documenting these rare sightings will aid in formulating stronger protection measures and raise public awareness about the region's biodiversity.
