A Rajya Sabha member has called on the Union government to accelerate approval and funding for the West Bengal Regional Rapid Transit System slated for Kolkata.
The Rajya Sabha MP representing West Bengal has formally appealed to the Union Ministry of Railways to expedite the clearance and financial support for the Kolkata Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS).
He highlighted that the project, which aims to connect Kolkata with surrounding districts through high‑speed commuter trains, is critical for easing traffic congestion and spurring economic growth in the region.
The RRTS, envisioned as a 200‑kilometre network linking the capital with key satellite towns, has been under discussion for several years but has faced delays in land acquisition and central funding.
The MP urged the Centre to prioritize the scheme in the upcoming budget and to fast‑track the necessary clearances, stressing that timely implementation will benefit millions of daily commuters.
