The historic text Rajatarangini has been added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register, a milestone celebrated by Jammu & Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha.
The ancient chronicle Rajatarangini, authored by the 12th‑century Kashmiri historian Kalhana, was officially inscribed in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register on Tuesday. The inclusion marks the first time a Kashmiri text has received this international recognition.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed pride in the achievement, noting that the inscription highlights the rich cultural heritage of Jammu & Kashmir. He also urged the state to preserve and promote its literary treasures.
UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register lists documentary heritage that is of outstanding value to humanity. Rajatarangini, which chronicles the history of Kashmir from mythic origins to the 12th century, is considered a key source for scholars studying the region’s past.
The decision was announced by UNESCO’s Director‑General, Audrey Azoulay, during a virtual ceremony attended by representatives from the Indian government and cultural institutions.
Experts say the inscription will boost academic interest and tourism, encouraging deeper engagement with Kashmir’s historical narratives.
