The Rajasthan government has released a draft Uniform Civil Code that would apply a single legal framework to marriage, divorce and live‑in relationships.

The state of Rajasthan has unveiled a draft Uniform Civil Code (UCC) that seeks to consolidate the legal treatment of marriage, divorce and live‑in relationships under a single statute. The proposal, issued by the state government, aims to replace the existing patchwork of personal laws with a uniform set of provisions applicable to all residents.

Under the draft, the same legal provisions would govern the formation, dissolution and rights of married couples as well as those in consensual live‑in arrangements. By treating these relationships uniformly, the code intends to simplify legal procedures and promote gender‑neutral outcomes.

The UCC remains a draft and will be examined by the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly before any formal adoption. Officials have indicated that the document will be subject to debate and may be amended based on feedback from stakeholders and the public.
