The Rajasthan government has prolonged the term of the OBC Political Representation Commission until 31 March 2027, prompting Congress leader Govind Singh Dotasra to question the necessity of the extension.

The state cabinet announced on Thursday that the tenure of the OBC Political Representation Commission will now run until 31 March 2027, a year beyond its original expiry. The move aims to give the commission additional time to complete its mandate of reviewing OBC representation in legislative bodies.

Congress state president Govind Singh Dotasra raised concerns in a press briefing, asking the government to justify why the commission’s term needed to be extended. He suggested that the decision could be perceived as an attempt to redraw caste-based political calculations.

Officials from the chief minister's office said the extension was procedural, intended to avoid a vacuum in the commission’s work while a new framework is being drafted. No further details on any changes to the commission’s composition or scope were disclosed.

The announcement comes amid ongoing debates across several states about the role of caste-based reservations and the mechanisms that monitor their implementation.

Stakeholders, including civil‑society groups, are expected to respond in the coming days as the commission prepares its next report.
