The state government of Rajasthan, led by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, has announced plans to introduce a Uniform Civil Code, marking a significant step towards legal uniformity across the state.
During a press conference, Rajasthan’s Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma announced the state’s intention to introduce a Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The move aims to replace the diverse personal laws that currently govern matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption, which vary across religious communities.
The UCC would establish a single set of laws applicable to all citizens, irrespective of religion, thereby promoting equality and simplifying legal processes. The proposal follows years of debate and aligns with the central government’s long‑term vision for a uniform legal framework.
To draft the code, the state will set up a committee comprising legal experts, scholars and representatives from civil society. The committee will consult stakeholders and conduct public hearings before submitting a comprehensive draft to the legislature.
