The Punjab government announced a subsidy of Rs 2,000 per quintal for wheat seed, aimed at easing input costs for farmers in Mohali.

The agriculture department of Punjab has unveiled a new subsidy scheme that will provide wheat seed growers in Mohali with a financial assistance of Rs 2,000 for every quintal of seed purchased. The move is intended to lower the cost of high‑quality seed, thereby encouraging farmers to adopt better varieties and boost wheat yields.

Under the scheme, the subsidy will be credited directly to the accounts of registered seed dealers, who will in turn pass on the benefit to the farming community. Officials said the measure aligns with the state’s broader objective of enhancing food‑grain production and stabilising farm incomes.

The announcement was made during a press briefing in Mohali, where senior officials highlighted that the subsidy will be funded from the state’s agricultural development budget. They urged farmers to register with the department to avail the benefit and assured timely disbursement ahead of the upcoming sowing season.

Agricultural analysts view the subsidy as a timely intervention, especially as input costs have risen sharply in recent months. If fully implemented, the scheme could improve seed adoption rates and contribute to a stronger wheat output for Punjab, a key contributor to India’s overall grain basket.
