Union minister Nitin Nabin warned that drug abuse in Punjab has hit an alarming level and called for a government capable of ensuring public safety.
Union minister Nitin Nabin told The Economic Times that the spread of illicit drugs in Punjab has escalated to a level that threatens public safety. He highlighted that the state's drug problem is now at an "alarming" stage, affecting youth and communities across districts.
Nabin urged the state administration to adopt decisive measures, emphasizing that only a government focused on security can curb the menace. He did not provide specific statistics but stressed the urgency of coordinated action between law‑enforcement agencies and social welfare programs.
The minister's remarks come amid growing concerns among parents, educators, and local officials about the impact of drug abuse on health, education and employment prospects in the region. He called for stronger enforcement of existing drug laws and increased rehabilitation support for addicts.
While no new policy announcements were made, Nabin's statement signals heightened political attention to the issue, with expectations that the state will intensify its anti‑drug operations in the coming weeks.
