Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced that Punjab will recruit 10,000 extra police personnel to strengthen the fight against the state's drug problem.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann disclosed in a press briefing that the Punjab government will add 10,000 police officers to its existing force within the next twelve months, aiming to intensify the crackdown on drug trafficking and consumption across the state.

The decision follows a series of reports highlighting a surge in narcotics-related incidents, which have strained law‑enforcement resources and contributed to rising crime and health concerns. The newly recruited personnel will be posted in districts most affected by the drug trade, with a focus on border regions and known trafficking corridors.

Funding for the recruitment drive will come from the state’s law‑and‑order budget, and the government has pledged enhanced training, modern equipment, and better logistical support for the fresh batch of officers. Mann stressed that the expansion of the police cadre is part of a comprehensive anti‑drug strategy that also includes rehabilitation, awareness campaigns, and stricter penalties for offenders.

Officials expect that the larger police presence will improve intelligence gathering, enable more frequent raids, and ultimately curb the flow of illicit substances into Punjab.
