Punjab's education board has updated school textbooks to include the story of Razia Sultan, aiming to counter gender bias in the curriculum.
The Punjab State Education Board announced on Monday that it has revised the history textbooks for classes 6 to 12 to incorporate the narrative of Razia Sultan, the 13th‑century ruler who broke gender norms to lead the Delhi Sultanate.
The updated edition, which will be distributed across government and private schools from the upcoming academic year, replaces a generic reference to “female rulers” with a detailed account of Razia’s reign, her administrative reforms and her challenges as a woman in power.
Education officials said the change is part of a broader initiative to promote gender equality in school materials and to provide students with role models that reflect India’s diverse heritage.
The board also highlighted that the new content will be reviewed by historians and curriculum experts to ensure accuracy and relevance for students.
