Police on the Ambala‑Chandigarh highway intercepted a drug trafficker carrying about 500 grams of opium, seizing the narcotic and arresting the suspect.

Punjab police reported that a drug trafficker was stopped on the Ambala‑Chandigarh highway near Mohali. During a routine check, officers discovered a concealed package containing approximately 500 grams of opium. The suspect was taken into custody and the narcotic was seized as evidence.

According to the police spokesperson, the seizure was part of an ongoing operation to curb the flow of illicit drugs through the region. The officer added that the quantity seized is significant for a single individual and indicates a well‑organized trafficking network.

The accused now faces charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, which could result in a lengthy prison term and hefty fines. Authorities have pledged to intensify surveillance on major transit routes to prevent similar incidents.

The bust adds to a series of recent drug‑related arrests in Punjab, highlighting the state's continued efforts to combat narcotics smuggling that threatens public health and safety.
