Punjab’s jail minister inaugurated a newly built open‑air jail for women in Patiala, marking a first of its kind in the state.
The jail minister of Punjab officially opened a dedicated open‑air correctional facility for women in Patiala on the day of the ceremony. The inauguration was attended by senior officials and local dignitaries, who highlighted the government's focus on gender‑sensitive penal reforms.
The new jail is designed to house female inmates in a less restrictive environment, emphasizing rehabilitation, vocational training and community reintegration. Officials said the open‑air model aims to reduce recidivism and provide a safer, more humane setting compared with traditional closed prisons.
State authorities expect the facility to accommodate several hundred inmates and to serve as a pilot project for similar institutions across Punjab. The ministry pledged regular monitoring to ensure compliance with legal and human‑rights standards.
