The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued a directive to the state governments of Punjab, Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh to furnish details of hit‑and‑run incidents and the status of compensation disbursals for 2022.

In a recent order reported by legal news portal Live Law, the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the administrations of Punjab, Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh to submit comprehensive data on hit‑and‑run cases recorded in their jurisdictions. The court’s request specifically includes details of each incident, the parties involved, and the current status of any compensation awarded under the 2022 scheme.

The directive aims to enable the judiciary to assess the effectiveness of existing compensation mechanisms and to identify gaps in the enforcement of traffic safety laws. By collating this information, the court intends to ensure that victims receive timely redress and that responsible parties are held accountable.

State officials have been asked to compile the required information and forward it to the court within a stipulated timeframe. The High Court has indicated that it will review the submitted data to determine whether further judicial or administrative action is warranted.

Legal experts note that such data collection could lead to more transparent reporting of hit‑and‑run incidents and may prompt policy revisions to strengthen road‑safety measures across the three regions.
