The Punjab government has temporarily stopped buying paddy at the Firozpur Chhawani market in Jalandhar, leaving local farmers without the usual procurement outlet.
The Punjab agricultural department announced today that the government’s procurement of paddy at the Firozpur Chhawani market in Jalandhar district has been suspended. The decision applies to all varieties of paddy that are normally bought under the state’s Minimum Support Price (MSP) scheme.
Firozpur Chhawani is one of the key mandis in the region, handling a substantial share of the state’s rice procurement each season. Traders and commission agents at the market typically facilitate the sale of farmers’ harvests to the government.
The abrupt halt has left many farmers who had brought their grain to the mandi awaiting payment with no immediate alternative. Local farmer groups have expressed concern that the suspension could affect cash flow and planting decisions for the upcoming season.
