After a prolonged standoff, the Punjab administration has cleared an 8% rise in dearness allowance for its employees and pensioners.

The Punjab state cabinet has given the green light to an eight‑percent hike in dearness allowance (DA) for government employees and pensioners, ending a weeks‑long standoff between the administration and employee unions. The decision, announced on Thursday, is expected to raise the cost‑of‑living component of salaries and pensions across the state.

The DA increase, a statutory adjustment linked to inflation, will be reflected in the next payroll cycle, providing immediate relief to thousands of civil servants and retirees who had been demanding a higher allowance. Officials said the move aligns Punjab's DA rates with recent central government revisions.

Union leaders welcomed the resolution but urged the government to ensure timely implementation. The cabinet’s approval comes after multiple rounds of negotiations that had stalled for several weeks, causing uncertainty among the workforce.

The state government has not disclosed any additional fiscal measures accompanying the DA hike, focusing solely on the allowance adjustment to address the immediate concerns of its staff and pensioners.
