Punjab faces power crunch as coal reserves at four thermal plants dip to 8‑15 days

Record electricity demand in Punjab has depleted coal stocks at four thermal plants, leaving only 8 to 15 days of fuel and prompting a 4.5‑hour power cut for industries.

Punjab's power grid is under strain as electricity consumption has surged to an all‑time high, outpacing the supply capacity of its thermal stations.
The four major thermal power plants in the state now report coal inventories sufficient for only eight to fifteen days of operation, a sharp decline from earlier reserves.
To manage the shortfall, the state electricity board has ordered a scheduled reduction of supply to industrial consumers, limiting power to roughly four and a half hours per day.
Officials said they are coordinating with coal suppliers to expedite deliveries and are exploring load‑shedding measures for non‑essential consumers to avert a broader outage.
