Punjab faces grain jam as wheat fills paddy storage silos

Large quantities of wheat are occupying storage facilities intended for paddy in Punjab, creating a bottleneck in grain handling.

Punjab's grain supply chain is under strain as wheat stocks have taken up space in silos that were earmarked for paddy. The unexpected overlap of the two harvest cycles has left storage yards crowded, delaying the movement of paddy to procurement centres.

Farmers and traders warn that the jam could affect paddy prices and the timing of government procurement, especially as the state prepares for the upcoming rabi season. With limited alternative storage, the backlog may force some consignments to be held longer than usual, raising concerns over grain quality.

State agricultural officials have acknowledged the issue and are coordinating with the Food Corporation of India to re‑allocate vacant capacity in nearby warehouses. They have also urged farmers to stagger deliveries where possible to ease pressure on the over‑filled facilities.

The situation underscores the need for better storage planning that accounts for overlapping harvests, a challenge that Punjab has faced repeatedly in recent years.
