Protest erupts in Kamjong, Manipur over SP's transfer after Chassad village attack

A crowd of villagers and local youths gathered in the headquarters of Kamjong district on Thursday, chanting slogans and blocking the main road to voice their anger over the recent transfer of the superintendent of police (SP). The demonstrators demanded that the SP, who was moved following the violent incident in Chassad village, be reinstated.

The Chassad village attack, which occurred earlier this month, resulted in several injuries and heightened tensions in the border area of Manipur. State officials transferred the SP as part of a security reshuffle, a move that many locals interpreted as a punitive action against the officer who had been overseeing law‑and‑order efforts.

Local authorities responded by deploying additional police personnel to contain the protest and prevent any escalation. While no arrests were reported, officials warned that any attempt to damage public property would be dealt with strictly.

Community leaders, speaking to reporters, said the protest reflects deep frustration over what they perceive as inadequate protection and a lack of accountability after the Chassad incident. They urged the state government to review the decision and restore the SP to his former post to restore confidence in the police force.
