A Deputy Inspector General of Prisons has been arrested after a murder convict was freed on a document later identified as a forged Supreme Court order.

The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the prison department was taken into custody after investigators found that a murder convict had been released on a paper that turned out to be a forged order allegedly issued by the Supreme Court.
Authorities said the forged document was presented to prison officials, leading to the premature discharge of the accused. The forgery was uncovered during a routine audit of release orders, prompting a swift arrest of the DIG.
Legal experts noted that presenting a counterfeit Supreme Court order is a serious offence under the Indian Penal Code and can attract stringent penalties, including imprisonment.
The incident has raised concerns about internal controls within the prison administration and the need for stricter verification mechanisms for judicial orders.
The police have launched a broader inquiry to determine whether other officials were complicit or if similar forgeries have been used in the past.
