The world's longest national swimming competition began on Sunday morning at Murshidabad's Ahiran Ghat. Now in its 80th year, this 81-kilometer-long event is set to conclude this afternoon at the K.N. College Ghat in Berhampore.
A total of 29 competitors were scheduled to participate in the 81-kilometer category—the longest in the world—for both men and women. However, as two competitors fell ill prior to the start, 27 swimmers entered the waters of the Bhagirathi River from Ahiran Ghat today.
Meanwhile, a 19-kilometer swimming competition for both men and women is set to begin this afternoon from Jiaganj Sadarghat in Murshidabad. This race will conclude at the Berhampore K.N. College Ghat. Thirty-seven men and fifteen women are participating in the 19-kilometer event.
Suti-I BDO Arup Saha said, "Although 29 contestants were scheduled to participate in the 81-kilometer-long swimming competition, two fell ill and could not enter the water at the last minute. This year, 27 contestants have taken to the water. Local residents wait all year to watch this event; this year, too, a large crowd has gathered on both banks of the river to see the swimmers."
