In a high‑profile operation, police confiscated more than Rs 50 crore in cash and gold from the home of a retired bus driver, uncovering ties to a local stone trader associated with the former TMC political heavyweight.

Earlier this week, a coordinated police raid on the residence of a retired bus driver led to the seizure of more than Rs 50 crore in cash and gold bullion. The operation, carried out by the local crime branch, uncovered a substantial cache of banknotes and gold bars that were stored in a hidden compartment of the house.

Investigators say the seized assets are linked to a stone trader who has long operated in the region’s quarrying sector. The retired driver is suspected of acting as a ‘revenue collector’, facilitating the movement of funds for the trader’s transactions.

The case has drawn attention to the alleged involvement of a former TMC political heavyweight in the stone trade, sparking accusations of political patronage and illicit financial flows. Political leaders from rival parties have called for a thorough probe into the matter.

The police have announced that they will continue to investigate the network of transactions and will cooperate with state authorities to trace the origin of the seized wealth.
