A police staff member in Jalandhar has been booked for cheating a victim of Rs 8 lakh by promising a government job, authorities said.

Jalandhar police have registered a criminal case against one of their own employees for allegedly duping a person of Rs 8 lakh on the pretext of securing a government job. The victim approached the officer with hopes of recruitment, and the employee reportedly collected the money after promising to facilitate the appointment.

According to the complaint filed, the accused used his position within the police department to gain the victim's trust, assuring that the funds would be processed for the job. When the promised recruitment did not materialise, the victim lodged a formal complaint, prompting an internal investigation.

The police department has now taken the matter into its own hands, filing a First Information Report (FIR) and beginning a probe to ascertain the full extent of the fraud. No further details about the victim's identity or the exact timeline have been disclosed.

Authorities have warned the public to be cautious of similar scams that exploit official positions for financial gain, and have urged anyone approached with unsolicited job offers to verify authenticity before making any payments.

The case underscores growing concerns over fraudulent schemes that misuse the credibility of government officials to extract money from job seekers.
