A fire ignited by accumulated waste broke out in the Shahi Majra area of Mohali, prompting police to clear vendors who had arrived to set up stalls for a market.
A blaze caused by piled-up garbage erupted in the Shahi Majra locality of Mohali on Tuesday. The fire, which started in a waste dump near the proposed market site, quickly spread to surrounding areas, prompting residents to call emergency services.
Police units arrived shortly after the alarm was raised and began extinguishing the flames. As the fire was brought under control, officers also moved to disperse a group of shopkeepers who had gathered to set up temporary stalls for an upcoming mandi.
Authorities said the vendors were removed to prevent further congestion and to ensure safety while the fire was being tackled. No injuries or major property damage were reported, and a police spokesperson indicated that an investigation into the cause of the waste accumulation would be launched.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about waste management in rapidly developing urban zones and the need for coordinated action between municipal bodies and law‑enforcement agencies.
