Indian authorities arrested Abhijeet Dipke, the founder of the 'cockroach' movement, following allegations of unlawful activities linked to the protest group.
The Delhi Police on Tuesday detained Abhijeet Dipke, the man who launched the ‘cockroach’ movement, a protest group that has drawn attention for its unconventional tactics and social media presence. Dipke, 32, was taken into custody at a police station in the city’s central district after a raid on his residence.
The arrest follows a series of complaints alleging that the movement was involved in unlawful demonstrations and the distribution of incendiary materials. Police officials said Dipke was booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code that cover unlawful assembly and possession of prohibited weapons.
A spokesperson for the Delhi Police stated that the operation was carried out after receiving credible intelligence about the group’s alleged plans to disrupt public order. The spokesperson added that Dipke’s arrest is part of a broader effort to curb extremist elements in the city.
Dipke’s supporters have called for a fair trial, while civil‑rights groups have urged authorities to ensure that the detention complies with legal norms. The case is expected to be heard in the Delhi High Court within the next few weeks.
