Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, officially launched the new Porur‑Poonamallee metro corridor in Chennai, expanding the city’s rapid‑transit network.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Chennai with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to flag off the Porur‑Poonamallee stretch of the city’s metro system. The ceremony marked the completion of the latest phase of Chennai Metro’s expansion, linking the western suburbs of Porur and Poonamallee with the existing network.

The new corridor is expected to ease traffic congestion on major arterial roads and provide commuters with a faster, more reliable public‑transport option. Officials highlighted that the line will serve thousands of daily passengers, reducing travel time between the two suburbs.

During the flag‑off, both leaders emphasized the government’s focus on sustainable urban mobility and the role of modern infrastructure in boosting economic growth. The inauguration was attended by senior railway officials and local dignitaries.

The Porur‑Poonamallee segment is part of the broader Phase‑II plan to extend Chennai’s metro coverage to peripheral areas, aiming to create an integrated transit system across the metropolitan region.
