Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) linking Delhi and Meerut on August 19, 2026.
New Delhi, August 19 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi presided over the flag‑off ceremony of the Delhi‑Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) at the newly built Meerut terminal. The event was attended by senior Union ministers, Uttar Pradesh officials and local dignitaries, marking a key milestone in the government's high‑speed rail agenda.
The RRTS corridor, spanning roughly 82 kilometres, will enable trains to cover the distance between Delhi and Meerut in under an hour, significantly cutting travel time for commuters. Designed for speeds up to 180 km/h, the line features modern stations, dedicated tracks and integrated ticketing with existing suburban networks.
During his address, PM Modi highlighted the project's role in decongesting Delhi’s road traffic, boosting regional economies and promoting sustainable transport. He announced that the first phase, covering Delhi to Meerut, will commence commercial operations by early 2027, with subsequent extensions to other parts of western Uttar Pradesh planned thereafter.
The inauguration underscores the central government's commitment to expanding high‑speed rail infrastructure across the country, aligning with broader initiatives to modernise public transport and spur balanced regional development.
