A pilgrim from Uttarakhand died after drowning at Brahmpuri Ghat on the Narmada River in Omkareshwar on Sunday morning, prompting concerns over medical response.

On Sunday morning, around 4:30 a.m., a pilgrim from Uttarakhand entered the waters of the Narmada River at Brahmpuri Ghat in Omkareshwar, Madhya Pradesh, for a ritual bath. The individual could not stay afloat and drowned, resulting in a fatality confirmed by local authorities.

Emergency services were alerted, and the victim was rushed to a nearby hospital. Reports indicate that the medical facilities were unable to revive the pilgrim, leading to criticism of the hospital's preparedness for such incidents.

Police have opened an inquiry to ascertain the exact circumstances of the drowning and to evaluate the adequacy of safety measures at the ghats. Officials have urged pilgrims to exercise caution during early‑morning baths, especially in fast‑moving sections of the river.

The incident has sparked a broader discussion among local residents and religious groups about improving rescue infrastructure and medical response at popular pilgrimage sites along the Narmada.
