Petrol Pumps in Punjab, Haryana Seek Exemption from New UPI MDR Rule

Petrol pumps in Punjab and Haryana have collectively approached the authorities to seek relief from the new Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) rule that applies to UPI transactions. The RBI‑issued guideline imposes a discount fee on merchants for each UPI payment, which could increase operating costs for fuel retailers. The pumps argue that the added expense would be passed on to consumers and could affect their competitiveness. Their request has been forwarded to the relevant state and central bodies for consideration. The outcome of the exemption plea is yet to be announced.
