Families displaced by development projects in Panna and Ajaygarh have continued their sit‑in for 51 days, pressing for full compensation, rehabilitation and the withdrawal of pending criminal cases.

The protest that began in the twin towns of Panna and Ajaygarh in Madhya Pradesh has now entered its 51st day. Residents displaced by a series of infrastructure and mining projects have set up a continuous sit‑in, keeping a fire burning as a symbol of their grievances.

Demonstrators are calling for a comprehensive package that includes adequate monetary compensation, complete rehabilitation of their homes and livelihoods, and the cancellation of criminal cases that were filed against them during earlier phases of the projects. They argue that the compensation offered so far is insufficient and that many families remain without basic amenities.

After a recent meeting with the newly appointed district collector, the protest leaders expressed cautious optimism that the administration may now be more receptive to their demands. The collector has promised to review the compensation and rehabilitation proposals and to facilitate the withdrawal of the pending legal cases, though no concrete timeline was provided.

The movement, which has drawn attention from local NGOs and political representatives, remains peaceful but firm. Organisers warned that any delay in addressing the core issues could lead to an escalation of the protest, while also emphasizing their willingness to engage constructively with the authorities.

As the 51‑day mark passes, the eyes of the region remain on Panna and Ajaygarh, awaiting a resolution that balances development objectives with the rights and welfare of the displaced families.
