Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif addressed the UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, warning that any attempt to curtail Pakistan’s share of water from the Indus River system would be treated as an act of war.
Sharif emphasized the importance of the Indus Water Treaty, signed in 1960, which governs water sharing between the two countries.
He said that Pakistan’s water needs are essential for its agriculture and population, and that any unilateral action would jeopardise national security.
The statement comes amid growing tensions over water allocation, as India has been seeking greater access to the rivers that flow through its territory.
