From next month, Indian Railways will switch off all onboard charging sockets on overnight trains between 11 pm and 5 am to reduce power load.

The Ministry of Railways has issued a new directive that all charging points on overnight long‑distance trains will be turned off from 11 pm to 5 am. The rule, slated to take effect from the upcoming schedule revision, applies to every sleeper and AC coach that offers plug‑in facilities.

Officials say the measure is aimed at curbing the railway’s nighttime power consumption, which spikes during peak grid hours. By disabling the sockets during the low‑traffic window, the rail network hopes to ease strain on the national grid and contribute to broader energy‑saving goals.

Passengers travelling on night services are advised to charge devices before boarding or use power banks for the journey. The charging points will resume operation at 5 am, allowing normal use during daytime travel.

Railway spokespersons acknowledge that the change may inconvenience some travelers, but stress that it is a temporary step aligned with ongoing sustainability initiatives across the transport sector.
