Minister Selja warned that 91 blocks in Haryana are facing excessive groundwater extraction while the Ghaggar river suffers from severe pollution.

Haryana’s environment minister, Selja, highlighted a dual crisis affecting the state’s rural landscape. According to her, 91 administrative blocks are experiencing unsustainable groundwater extraction, pushing water tables to critical lows.

At the same time, the Ghaggar river, which traverses several districts, is reported to be heavily polluted, posing risks to agriculture, livestock and public health. Selja cited rising industrial discharge and unchecked sewage as primary contributors to the river’s deteriorating quality.

The minister called for immediate remedial actions, including stricter regulation of borewell drilling, promotion of water‑saving irrigation techniques, and accelerated clean‑up drives for the Ghaggar. State officials are expected to draft a comprehensive plan to curb over‑exploitation and restore river health.
