The Jammu & Kashmir government reports that more than ten thousand mining trucks are now fitted with GPS devices to monitor operations.
The administration of Jammu & Kashmir announced that over 10,000 mining vehicles have been fitted with GPS tracking units, a move aimed at tightening oversight of the region's extractive activities. The data, released by the state’s mining department, confirms that the devices are now active across major quarry sites and stone‑cutting yards.
Officials said the GPS rollout is intended to curb illegal mining, improve worker safety, and ensure that royalties are accurately recorded. By monitoring vehicle movements in real time, authorities hope to detect unauthorised extraction and reduce environmental damage.
The installation programme, which began earlier this year, involved coordination between the mining department, the state transport authority and private technology providers. According to the report, the tracking system covers both diesel‑powered trucks and smaller haulage units, with a central command centre receiving live location data.
Preliminary assessments suggest that the GPS network will enhance revenue collection and provide a reliable database for future policy planning. The government has also indicated that non‑compliant operators will face penalties, including fines and suspension of licences.
