The Odisha government has begun a 44‑day drive aimed at eliminating child labour from all gram panchayats across the state.

The state administration of Odisha announced the launch of a 44‑day intensive drive to rid gram panchayats of child labour. The initiative targets every village council in the state, seeking to identify and withdraw children from any form of work that interferes with their education and wellbeing. Officials will conduct field visits, interact with local leaders and families, and coordinate with law‑enforcement agencies to enforce existing child‑labour prohibitions. The campaign also aims to raise awareness among community members about the legal and social implications of employing minors. By the end of the period, the government expects a measurable reduction in child‑labour cases and a stronger compliance framework at the grassroots level.

The drive is being overseen by the state’s social welfare department, which will compile data on violations and submit periodic reports to the chief minister’s office. Training sessions for panchayat officials are planned to equip them with the tools needed to monitor compliance and support affected children. The government has urged NGOs and civil‑society groups to collaborate in providing rehabilitation and educational opportunities for children rescued from labour.

Stakeholders have welcomed the move, noting that sustained monitoring and community engagement are essential for lasting change. The 44‑day timeline reflects the administration’s urgency to address a problem that has persisted despite earlier interventions. Success of the campaign could set a precedent for similar initiatives in other states.
